Chapter 16

The following day was Friday, the 23rd day since Lopez’s murder. Mitchell slowly opened her eyes at 8:05 am and began to stretch. She usually got up by 6:00. As she stretched, she could feel the tightness in her lower back. Grace walked into the room with a cup of coffee.

“Here you go. How are you feeling today?”

“Sore. What happened to the alarm?”

“I shut it off. I figured you needed some extra sleep after last night.”

“Yeah, I suppose. I’ve got a lot to do today. Have you heard anything about Rick?”

“Yes, Captain Gonzalez called and said Rick was awake this morning, and his vitals looked good. He should be upgraded from serious to stable later today.”

Mitchell let out a sigh of relief. “Oh good, I was so worried about him, Grace. I thought he might die.” As she said this, Mitchell began to cry. Grace sat down on the bed beside her and wrapped her arm around her.

“I know, Leah. Everything’s going to be okay now. Rick will be back to work before you know it.”

“I’m not so sure, Grace.”

“What do you mean?”

“You can’t tell anyone this. Rick said he would tell the captain when this case was finished, and I promised I wouldn’t say anything until then.”

“Leah, what is it?”

“Rick slept with one of our suspects.”

Grace jumped up off the bed. “What!?”

“He was undercover and dating a woman from the website. Things went too far.”

Grace sat back down on the bed. “I can’t believe it. Why would Rick do that?”

“I asked him that same question. I think he just lost his head for a few minutes.”

“What are you going to do?”

“Rick will tell the truth. The woman is sure to bring it up once she is arrested. But anyway, we still have work to do. We found out from our prime suspect that there are probably seven victims. We need to find out who they are and who killed each one.”

Mitchell wiped her eyes and downed her coffee, then got dressed for the day. She was back at work by 9:10 am. The captain had not yet returned to work, but detectives Boyd and Warren were already working.

“Per direction from the captain, our analysts have made this case a priority and are already analyzing the computer and phones we took from Castaneda’s residence,” advised Boyd.

“That is good to hear,” said Mitchell.

“What’s on the agenda for today?” asked Warren.

“We need to look for any deaths that might match the M.O. in our cases. Men cheating on their wives, anonymous letter, men later found dead. We could have as many as seven victims out there somewhere, most likely in other jurisdictions. We know about the one in Ft. Lauderdale already. Tom, why don’t you work on sending out alerts to all surrounding agencies. Lisa and I will check our local files and start more background work on Emily Evans.”

“On it,” said Boyd.

The detectives then started their work while still waiting for any information computer forensics could provide for them. Mitchell called Steve Logan and updated him on the latest information obtained the previous night.
